Like many people, I spend a lot of time at my desk, so it’s important to make sure that time is spent comfortably and as stress free as possible. So I’ve been looking in to Feng Shui. It’s the old ancient Chinese practice which claims to use energy forces to harmonize individuals with their surrounding environment! The principles of Feng Shui promote balance, well-being and productivity – so it’s not a bad thing to incorporate in to your office space!
In a nutshell, I have summarised my findings with the following list of suggestions to improve your Feng Shui – why not give it a go and see if it helps you too?
Choose your office colours carefully
Green: improves health and balance
Blue: supports career success and growth
Yellow: represents happiness and good times
White: brings creative energy
Earth tones: help to destress
Red / Orange: helps to bring energy and vibrancy in to your work
Yellow: brings happiness
Declutter
Clutter drains your energy and can be very distracting whilst slowing you down mentally and physically - as items can get lost in all the chaos.
Make it a task at the beginning and end of each day to clear your space of trash and clutter so you are free to focus on work. If each day is too much, diarise a day each month.
Get a good chair
It's where you spend most of your time working and investing in a comfortable chair can have enormous benefits. Some of these recommendations are not ‘Feng Shui’ but should be mentioned!
Choose the correct colour for your Feng Shui office!
Face the light and air when you can.
The backrest should be adjustable and follow the shape of the spine.
Feet should rest flat on the floor comfortably.
Arm rests should be close the body and allow the shoulder to relax.
Arm height should be adjustable and match the height of the desk.
In a sitting position, the centre of your computer screen should be at eye level.
Make sure it has a high back to support, preferably above the shoulders.
Buy plants
Plants help to purify the air and bringing nature in to your environment is health enhancing.
Even if you can't face a window or sit outside when working, it's critical to incorporate nature into your environment.
Just place a few plants and succulents around your desk.
Position your desk carefully
If you can, move your desk so that it faces the entrance of your office. This will help you feel in a position of command and control.
Try not to face a wall, but if you have to, brighten up your space with some beautiful artwork.
Maximise your exposure to natural light as this will make you feel more at ease.
Make sure your desk is the right height to access your computer and that you can position your legs under the desk comfortably.
Make your office a happy place
Feng Shui is all about bringing positive energy into your life, so it's important to surround yourself with things that make you happy.
When deciding how to decorate, be selective and keep it uncomplicated. Keep it calm and relaxed.
Hang pictures with family of friends that spark happy memories or frame inspirational quotes to motivate you when you're tired!
